Keeping things clean

We have been cleaning our biofilter and tank.

We noticed that as the fish are growing we need to keep the water and tank as clean and healthy as possible.

When we took our filter apart we saw all the different types of filtered that help keep the tank and water healthy. There was wool, gauze, rocks and plastic balls.

The filter had stopped lots of excess food and fish poo from going back into the tank.

Our fish are growing!😋

The playful salmon have eaten their egg sacks.it seams that the salmon liked their egg sacks on their bellies more than the fish food we feed them. They are now faster and sleeker.🐟

The salmon are looking more silver and shiny now since they have eaten their egg sack .You can still see their bump from where the sack was. The salmon always wiggle their tails when they are awake😯.
The fish don't need the cardboard cover anymore as they can now stand the light unlike they use to.👀.                              We now have to feed the salmon and we grind up the food because their mouths are so small. Wonder if they like it.  🍰🍟🍕  They sure are growing fast.💨

Tank Team

This morning we gave our tank some attention. This included a chemical ammonia test conducted by Waimarie and Chrystal.

Next job was to siphon out of 50% of the water and replace with fresh cold tap water.

We noticed that some of the more mature looking fish are swimming up to the top of the tank.

Stream Clean!

Today Room 11 and 12 went over to our local stream and had a environmental cleanup. We found tyres, lunch wrappers, cans, glass, a ball and lots of other rubbish. Although we did find three healthy brown trout. It was a real treat for us and particularly motivating to see a wild animal in it's natural environment. We were all impressed with the way the trout was camouflaged in the stream.

We managed to collect about six bags of rubbish out of the stream.

Well done crew!

Check out when the Take A Kid Fishing Day is.

Our Salmon have arrived!

On the 28th of May Peter Robinson from North Canterbury Fish and Game came and visited us at school. He brought us our new fish tank, chiller and bio-filter. He also explained to us about the small salmon eggs that we would soon receive.

On the 5th of June Peter delivered our very special fertilised salmon eggs. We had to carefully put them into the tank which was at the correct temperature of 12 degrees. The temperature is very important for hatching the eggs at the right time.

On Monday 15th June this our eggs hatched into alevin. The children and I were really excited about the prospect of now looking after our baby salmon.

The children were inspired to create origami dragons to protect the salmon.
The salmon are light sensitive to they are cover with the box for most of the day. We can remove the box after a few weeks when they start to turn into fry.

Here are some pictures of our experience so far.

Please feel free to come in and ask the children about this project.

We are all pretty pumped about the next couple of months seeing these incredible fish grow and develop.
