Stream Clean!

Today Room 11 and 12 went over to our local stream and had a environmental cleanup. We found tyres, lunch wrappers, cans, glass, a ball and lots of other rubbish. Although we did find three healthy brown trout. It was a real treat for us and particularly motivating to see a wild animal in it's natural environment. We were all impressed with the way the trout was camouflaged in the stream. 

We managed to collect about six bags of rubbish out of the stream.

Our Salmon have arrived!

On the 28th of May Peter Robinson from North Canterbury Fish and Game came and visited us at school. He brought us our new fish tank, chiller and bio-filter. He also explained to us about the small salmon eggs that we would soon receive.

On the 5th of June Peter delivered our very special fertilised salmon eggs. We had to carefully put them into the tank which was at the correct temperature of 12 degrees. The temperature is very important for hatching the eggs at the right time.

On Monday 15th June this our eggs hatched into alevin. The children and I were really excited about the prospect of now looking after our baby salmon.  

The children were inspired to create origami dragons to protect the salmon.

The salmon are light sensitive to they are cover with the box for most of the day. We can remove the box after a few weeks when they start to turn into fry.

We are all pretty pumped about the next couple of months seeing these incredible fish grow and develop.
